Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments from captain Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple interviews following his team's loss in the second Ashes versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, the captain stated he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said the England leader.

But, following Crawley made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "weak men" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four came during a decisive triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant England 207-6 in pursuit of a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

A loss will extend England's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – after England losing the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a formidable team. It was inevitably hard coming here to face them. They entered as the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's performance in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his short-term place in the side, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in England's second knock on Saturday, extending his modest returns against Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and averages 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is noise from the outside. There is no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," he concluded.
