The star has handed over the full amount of his £25,000 honor prize money to the Music Venues Trust, which works to protect the UK's grassroots music venues.

He was presented with the cheque on October 16 as his latest record People Watching was chosen as the outstanding release of the previous year.

Fender has decided to hand the money over to the MVT, in recognition of the vital role local spots had in his beginning days.

"I wouldn't be doing this success if it weren't for all the shows I played around the region, and beyond, when I was starting out," said Sam Fender. "These venues are iconic, but they are facing challenges."

From early 2023 onward, more than 150 of these spaces have permanently closed – about 16% of the whole industry in the UK.

Over the past year, major artists like Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the trust in its efforts to support the industry, by applying a modest fee to their admission fees, which goes to help local stages.

He also participated, generating over £100k on his recent tour to support 38 local spots across Britain.

The money assisted venues that were dealing with imminent closure due to difficulties arising from floods, fire incidents and personal losses, as well as regulatory hurdles, legal disputes and sound issues.

Some locations received monetary aid in modernizing facilities and gear that positively impacted artists and concertgoers.

"The notion that revenue from performances in large arenas supports the independent spots, where it begins for musicians like me, is just logical," the star has said.

Fender is not the first artist to donate his award funds to good deeds.

Back when they earned the prize in the mid-90s for their record the album, lead singer Cocker declared that the act would donate their winnings to the non-profit War Child.

During 2002, rapper and singer she shared her bounty among several good causes, such as the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell charity.

"And I donated a grand to the center, to their classes, because I did gymnastics when I was a child and they needed better apparatus," Ms Dynamite explained to the media.

Previously, Ezra Collective contributed their winnings to the local youth club that developed their act, as well as other local music groups.

Also the 1994 recipients M People contributed their winnings to a charity for MS after a acquaintance was found to have the illness.

"The victory was ample," remarked vocalist Heather Small. "The cash was the bonus but we didn't require the bonus, because we had the cake. So our victory impacted somebody else's life."

Last week, the MVT announced it had rescued two grassroots venues in south-east England, by bringing them into public stewardship.

The first in the city and the second in that location were purchased under the public acquisition program, which is backed by the arts council and enthusiasts who purchase "stakes" in the properties.
