Tetris Couldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category May Address This Issue

Whenever a major honors show nears, there’s always a demand to include of new categories to honor unsung work and fill the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.

Another commentator has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. The same goes for tabletop games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request is the most urgent above others. This is the request: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards currently feature genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Which classification works between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition in any category in 2014
  • A different innovative game missed out that year
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment that year
  • Just some brain-teasers managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often compact experiences, however the design behind logic titles is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most engaged experiences globally continuing this trend for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with well-known building titles competing to become best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators operate at the hard edge game development, creating some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait decades.
