The UK and US have secured a landmark trade agreement that will preserve zero levies on British pharmaceutical products going into the US market.

The Terms of the Deal

As part of the deal, the UK has pledged to raise funding on drugs through the National Health Service (NHS). This move secures that tariffs on these crucial products will stay at nothing for a period of three years.

This deal follows earlier statements to hike import taxes on branded drug imports, with potential rates mentioned reaching double the cost.

"This agreement with the United Kingdom strengthens the international landscape for new treatments and establishes long-overdue fairness to American-British drug exports," a statement noted.

Economic Impact

Drugs constitute one of the Britain's biggest export categories to the America, which is by far the primary buyer for large British pharmaceutical firms.

Export figures reveal that in the one-year period prior to the third quarter, the UK exported pharmaceutical products worth £11.1bn to the US. This amount represented 17.4% of all goods exports in that timeframe.

"This guarantee protects jobs, stimulates funding and sets the stage for the UK to emerge as a international leader for life sciences," a government official remarked.

Specific British Pledges

The deal includes several notable changes from the UK:

  • Revised Affordability Limit: The UK will raise the cost ceiling at which it deems new medicines to be unaffordable by 25%.
  • Higher Drug Budget: There is a aim to double overall health service expenditure on treatments from 0.3 percent of the national economy to 0.6 percent over the following ten-year period.
  • Rebate Cap: The sum drug companies must return to the NHS to control costs will be capped at fifteen percent. In the past, repayments exceeded 20%.

Recent Tensions

The deal takes place against a ongoing row between the pharmaceutical industry and the UK government over spending levels and NHS adoption.

The disagreement were heightened by assertions that American consumers were charged several times more for the equivalent treatments than people in the UK and Europe.

Recently, several large drug company projects in the UK have been halted or scrapped, while multi-billion-dollar expansions have been directed toward US facilities.

The Science Minister stated that the NHS had to increase expenditure on treatments, noting that its expenditure on drugs had declined as a percentage of its overall budget over the previous ten-year period.
